Why is it Important?

A variety of housing price points in every community is important because without it the region would be economically segregated, which increases the potential for the cycle of poverty to continue, decreases inter-class socialization, and makes it more difficult for low-income workers to access employment and other amenities. When left to the market, housing in areas with the best schools, parks, safety and proximity to employment are often unaffordable for most residents, while housing affordable to low income residents is often limited to areas of the region that lack amenities and opportunities. The measure is an indicator of how well the region is providing all residents with the choice to live in a community that provides good access to jobs, quality schools, health care and other opportunities.
